WHIM W’HIM PRESENTS 3 WORLD-PREMIERE CONTEMPORARY DANCE CREATIONS BY 3 CHOREOGRAPHIC MASTERMINDS IN JANUARY 2019 AT “3X3”
Seattle, WA (December 5, 2018) – Whim W’Him, Seattle Contemporary Dance Company’s next production will feature cutting-edge contemporary dance creations by celebrated choreographers who are from coast to coast. “3×3″ features world-premieres by Zoe Scofield (Seattle), Yin Yue (New York), & Olivier Wevers (Seattle).

Making her Whim W’Him choreographic debut is Zoe Scofield of zoe | juniper. Zoe is a dance and visual artist from Seattle who is the winner of a 2015 Guggenheim Fellowship Award. New York based Yin Yue is an award-winning choreographer and the Artistic Director of YY Dance Company. This will be Yin’s first creation for Seattle audiences. Whim W’Him Artistic Director and Founder, Olivier Wevers is thrilled to set his 25th new work on the company.

Whim W’Him is an award-winning Seattle-based contemporary dance company founded in 2009 by Olivier Wevers, former Pacific Northwest Ballet principal dancer and choreographer. The company presents all new works and has a mission to provide a platform centered around choreography and dance for artists to explore their craft through innovation and collaboration. Since its formation in 2009, Whim W’Him has created more than 50 new contemporary dances by 30+ global choreographers.

Zoe Scofield, Choreographer
2015 Guggenheim Fellow Zoe is a dance and visual artist based in Seattle Washington since 2002. Born and raised in Gainesville GA, Zoe began ballet at a young age, instilling in her a deep love and interest in structure, discipline and performances’ ability to create a transformative experience. Zoe attended Walnut Hill School for the Arts, an arts high school in Boston MA, receiving a Monticello Choreography Fellowship and graduating with high honors in dance. After, she danced with Prometheus Dance in Boston and Atlas Moves, directed by Bill James in Toronto Canada.In 2005 Zoe began working with video and visual artist Juniper Shuey on video, photographic and dance collaborations shown in visual art galleries, museums and theaters. They have been commissioned and presented by national and international arts centers such as, On the Boards, PICA, Trafo House of Art, Dance Theater Workshop, Bates Dance Festival, NYLA, Spoleto Festival, Jacob’s Pillow, Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, Body Festival (New Zealand), Yerba Buena Center, Columbia College Chicago, DiverseWorks, The Frye Art Museum and many more. They have taught workshops and given lectures on dance, photography, collaboration and installation throughout the US and internationally. Throughout her career Zoe has been awarded residencies, awards and grants from 4Culture, Alpert Award, Artist Trust, Case Van Rij, City Arts Magazine, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, The Glenn H. Kawasaki Foundation, The MacDowell Colony, MAD Air, MAP Fund, Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, National Performance Network, New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, On the Boards, Princess Grace Foundation, among others. Zoe has taught at school and studios around the US.

Olivier Wevers, Artistic Director and Choreographer
Dedicated to creating works of artistic innovation and collaboration, Brussels- born Olivier founded Whim W’Him in 2009. Before establishing the company, he was a principal dancer with Pacific Northwest Ballet and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. His awards and recognition include the Princess Grace Foundation Choreography Fellowship, the City of Seattle Mayor’s Arts Award, the grand prize award for an unprecedented two years in a row at the annual Dance Under the Stars Choreography Festival in California, and the ArtistTrust/ Washington State Arts Commission Fellowship Award. He participated in the National Choreographers Initiative and the prestigious New York Choreographic Institute. Olivier has created works for companies and festivals around the world, including Pacific Northwest Ballet, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Grand Rapids Ballet, Northwest Dance Project, BalletX, Spectrum Dance Theater, Prix de Lausanne, White Bird’s 4×4 Ballet Project, and Dance the Dream Seattle.

Yin Yue, Choreographer
Artistic Director of YY Dance Company, Yin is internationally recognized as a versatile performer and choreographer. Born and raised in Shanghai, China, she trained rigorously in technically-demanding and highly-structured Chinese classical and folk dance, as well as classical ballet technique, at Shanghai Dance School. She earned her undergraduate degree at Shanghai Normal University, equipping her with performance credits that spanned festivals and showcases throughout China. After further pursuing her MFA in dance from NYU’s Tisch School of The Arts in 2008, Yin quickly gained recognition as a unique and exceptional talent among her peers. Yin created an innovative contemporary dance technique FoCo Technique that soon caught the attention of the dance world. Yin Yue was the winner of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago 2015 International Commissioning Project, winner of the 2015 BalletX Choreographic Fellowship, and winner of Northwest Dance Project’s 5th Annual Pretty Creatives International Choreographic Competition in 2013. Through these high-profile successes, Yin was commissioned by all three widely-recognized companies as well as other companies and organizations namely Limon Dance Company, Bruce Wood Dance, Boston Dance Theater, 10 Hairy Legs, New Dialect, Boston Dance Theater, Balletto Teatro di Torino in Italy, Backhausdance, Tisch School of The Arts and George Mason University. She was also selected as First Place in Choreography at National Professional Dance Competition in Shanghai, China, 92Y Harkness Dance 2016-2017 Artist In Residence, Emerging Choreographer of 2015 at Springboard Danse Montreal, as well as a finalist at The A.W.A.R.D Show 2010! presented by New York The Joyce Theater Foundation. Her work has been recognized by organizations and festivals such as SummerStage, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Inside Out Festival, Schrit_tmacher Festival in Aachen, Germany, Open Doors Dance Festival in Iowa City, New York International Fringe Festival, DanceNOW[NYC] at Joe’s Pub, Peridance Capezio Theater, New York Live Arts, Dixon Place, La MaMa Moves International Festival and many more. Yin Yue will join the BFA dance faculty of the Peabody Conservatory as artist-in-residence for the fall 2018 semester at John Hopkins University.
