A sampling of comments sent to Whim W’Him on Casting the First Rock in Twenty-Twelve (Intiman Theatre, January 20-22, 2012), three new works by Olivier Wevers—
La Langue de l’amour, Flower Festival, and thrOwn …
Mr. Wevers is to be commended on the length of all three pieces. He appears to have an idea, deploys enough choreography to develop it and then comes to a quick conclusion. By contemporary standards, all three pieces are spare and sharply focused. That’s a big plus and serves to set this work apart from a lot of contemporary dance pieces.
Mr. Wevers is also to be commended for providing informative explanations of all three pieces in the program notes. This, too, is very welcome. Many choreographers seem either unable or unwilling to tell audiences what they are trying to achieve.
I was so deeply moved by your company last night and your creation. I have always been drawn to genius, from Beethoven, Coltrane, Picasso, Pavarotti, Steinbeck, Donizetti,Verdi etc…(the list is long). I want you to know you are a genius and you may not be able to see that because things are moving so quickly and you are so busy. As you said, “You are learning the “business of dance!” I want you to know that I would bring my young children to your performance so they can learn the complexity of our culture. As you conquer the issues of hatred, judgment, bigotry, persecution of homosexuality and ultimately the complexity of being an emotional, spiritual, and physical being on earth, floating through the cosmos. These are my goals as well through my art.
Just wanted to say what an amazing event this weekend. Congrats to you and your beautiful dancers. It was an evening to remember.
I wanted to send my congratulations on another fine program. I thought your programming really worked, balancing the heavier theme with your wonderfully witty pieces. You really do excel at injecting humor into your choreography. I was glad to see it return.
I thought ThrOwn was really complete. It all came together with the costumes and Steve Jensen’s scenery. Again, well done.
At the Q & A I found the one woman’s comment about being surprised to see point shoes in “contemporary” dance an interesting window into the general population’s ideas of ballet. (sigh) Please, continue to blur those boundaries and confuse people You are uniquely positioned to blend the two forms and it’s exciting to watch.

What an amazing show you put on Sunday night. This was my first and definitely not last performance I will watch. I was extremely impressed and recommend your work to everyone.
When I saw Andrew dance for the first time with PNB it brought back the sense of excitement that I had when I saw Lucien dance for the first time. Now to see them dance together is especially magic. Wonderful show tonight.
I have NEVER been disappointed at a Whim W’Him performance, and tonight was no different. Thanks for the great show!
I loved all three, and thought thrOwn was truly incredible….To me, the variance in the sections, and the passing of bodies and cloaks and dominance, underscored the tenuous (and often hypocritical) hold on power that those who often cast the first stone historically have had. I didn’t see the notes last night, but didn’t need them: every body revealed the story so clearly.
Saw my first Whim W’him performance on Friday night. Wow, I’ll be a regular now. The second act was my favorite — very provocative. I’m fascinated by the creative process behind the piece.
Whim W’Him was absolutely incredible. Go see for yourself. No really, do it. No regrets.
You guys “rocked” the Intiman last night … great show!
The performance tonight (Jan 20 in Intiman) was spectacular. Exquisite choreography, masterful dancing, incredible music. Way to go Oliver and troup[e].
